Quick tips: 3 ways to improve your waterstart and beachstart technique 🌊🏄‍♂️

Are you ready to level up your windsurfing game this summer? The latest GetWindsurfing Instagram Reel is here to provide you with 3 top tips on improving your waterstart and beachstart techniques. Whether you are a beginner looking to master the basics or a seasoned windsurfer aiming to refine your skills, these tips will help you on the water to get on the board with style, grace and efficiency!

Control the power with the direction of the board.

Point the board more upwind for control and more across the wind for power.

Start with the board facing upwind and in a position of control. Slowly let the board turn more downwind, when the power feels right allow the sail to pull you over the board. Note that in stronger winds and more powered-up conditions, you will get on the board when it is still pointing quite upwind and in lighter winds and less powered situations you will get on the board when it is pointing more across the wind.

Posture is important!

Help get your back foot onto the board by leaning back with the head and the shoulders.

However, it is harder for the sail to pull you onto the board when you leaning back! To correct this make sure that when you feel the moment is right to be pulled onto the board, bring your head and shoulders forward into a more upright posture or even start to lean forward slightly towards the mast foot.

Mast foot pressure

We get on the back of the board at low speed in a beachstart or waterstart and this can cause the tail to sink and or the board to turn too far up-wind. To correct this we need to balance our body weight getting on the back of the board with mast foot pressure. To do this make sure that as the sail lifts to a more upright position you keep your body low, hanging down from the boom and driving the weight down through the mast, to the mastfoot. This will take the weight off the back of the board and apply it more centrally. It will keep the board flat and stable and pointing in the intended direction.

As a final hot tip.... Keep lower for longer! Wait until the board is sailing away with momentum before slowly starting to stand in a more upright stance.
